Johnny Depp has claimed Amber Heard’s claims about his ‘drug abuse’ are ‘false’ and that he is ‘not some maniac who needs to be high’.
The 58-year-old Hollywood star is suing his ex-wife Amber, 35, for defamation in a $50million lawsuit after claiming an article Amber wrote about domestic violence was directed at him.
The ‘Pirates of the Caribbean’ star took the stand to tell his story to the court and he opened up about his ‘poly substance abuse’, which means he used different drugs and not just one.
Discussing his childhood, Johnny claimed that when he was five, he would bring “nerve pills” to his mother, who he said abused him in his formative years.
The court heard Depp would “take one himself” after seeing how the pills had made his mother happier, and it would help him “escape the messy nature of what we were going through.”
Johnny admitted: “That was the beginning when I realized that nerve pills calm the nerve. It was quite a young age to discover that and I’m not proud to admit it, but there was nothing else I could do.”
The actor went on to claim he was taking drugs, mainly opioids, to “numb the spirits of my youth” and that it was “self-medication” rather than “to go partying.”
He said when he was 11 his experimentation with drugs meant, “I wasn’t shy about trying a substance to see if the effects might take a little bit more of the edge.”
Johnny told the court he then did not take any substances for a while.
He said: “There were many years when I didn’t touch any substance or drink anything. It was never for the ‘party effect’ but to numb my insides of the things that can plague someone who has experienced trauma.
“But the characterization of my ‘drug abuse’ that Ms. Heard has provided is grossly embellished, and I’m sorry, much of it is just plain wrong.”
Speaking further about Amber’s claims, Johnny said: “I think it was an easy target for her to hit because when you’ve trusted someone for years and told them the many secrets of your life, that information can be used against you, especially if.” it is taken to a point that is sometimes impossible.
“I’m not a maniac who needs to be high or charged all the time.”
