Social media ‘played no role’ in Johnny Depp trial says lawyer

Johnny Depp’s lawyers have denied Amber Heard’s claims that social media had an impact on the jury’s verdict when the actor won a legal battle over his ex-wife last week.

Camille Vasquez and Ben Chew have revealed that their strategy during the heated case – which took place in the US for six weeks – was to use Amber’s own words against her.

They admitted to drafting their questions based on her previous testimony, with Camille telling ABC’s George Stephanopoulos that it was enough to simply tell the jury all there was to know about the actress. .

Amber’s team argues that the jury has been influenced by the support for Johnny across social media – including TikTok.

However, Ben insisted it “played no role” and the jury reached a verdict based entirely on the evidence presented by both sides.

Camille also denied that the #MeToo movement was ignored by the ruling in Johnny’s favor.

She said: “We encourage any victim to come forward. Domestic violence has no gender.

“The facts are what they were. The jury made a unanimous decision based on those facts.”

Johnny was awarded $10 million (£8m) in damages and $5m (£4m) in compensatory damages.

It sounded disappointing when the verdict was read out.

The Aquaman actress has filed a lawsuit against Johnny, seeking nearly £78 million in damages after claiming that his legal team falsely accused her of fabricating charges against the actor.

She was awarded $2 million (£1.6 million) in damages after proving one of her counterclaims before a jury.

After the ruling, Heard said she felt “heartbroken” by the ruling, adding that she was “still sadder” that she had “lost the right” to “speak freely and openly”.

“The disappointment I feel today cannot be put into words. I am heartbroken that the mountain of evidence is still insufficient against the disproportionate power, influence and sway of my ex-husband,” she said in a statement.

“I am even more disappointed with what this sentence means for other women.

“It’s a step backwards. It sets the clock back to a time when a woman who spoke up and spoke up could be publicly humiliated and humiliated.

“I believe Johnny’s lawyers succeeded in getting the jury to ignore the pivotal issue of free speech and to ignore convincing evidence that we won in the UK.

“I am very sad that I lost this case. But it still makes me sadder that I seem to have lost the right I thought I had as an American – to speak freely and openly. “
