Boris Johnson is launching a new “national mission” to tackle the dementia of the late Carry On and EastEnders star Dame Barbara Windsor.
The Prime Minister said the Government would commit to an additional £95 million in funding for research, meeting its pledge to double funding for the search for a treatment for the disease to £160 million by 2024.
He issued a call for a “Bab’s army” of volunteers, with or without a family history of dementia, to come forward to participate in clinical trials of new preventive therapies. .

The announcement follows a meeting earlier this week in Downing Street between Mr Johnson and Dame Barbara’s widow, Scott Mitchell.
The actress, who died in 2020, helped promote a dementia awareness campaign after Mr Mitchell revealed in 2018 that she had been diagnosed with the disease four years earlier.
Mr Johnson said: “Barbara Windsor is a British hero.
“I am delighted that we can now honor Dame Barbara in such a fitting way, launching a new national dementia mission on her behalf.
“We can work together to defeat this disease, and honor one special woman who has tirelessly campaigned for change.”
Mr Mitchell said: “Barbara will be very proud of her legacy, hopefully future families won’t have to go through the same heartbreaking experience she and I have.
“I can’t stop thinking about her looking down with pride.”
Downing Street said the mission will be driven by a new task force that brings together industry, the NHS, academia and families living with the disease.
It will draw on recent advances in data science and biology, including genomics, artificial intelligence (AI) and the latest brain imaging technology, to test new treatments from a range of viable options are increasing.

Mr Mitchell is an ambassador for Alzheimer’s Research UK, and the charity’s chief executive Hilary Evans said: “The vaccine task force has torn down the rule book on how drugs are discovered. , drug testing and drug licensing are performed.
