Jon Batiste is ‘so disappointed’ to cancel shows after testing positive for Covid

Jon Batiste said he was “so disappointed” when he canceled several upcoming shows after testing positive for Covid-19.

The Grammy winner said he will be absent from The Late Show with Stephen Colbert and will have to postpone the premiere of his American Symphony at New York’s Carnegie Hall – a show he’s been working on for years.

Batiste said the decision to cancel was “to protect my family, my friends and our loyal fans,” assuring them he would be returning to the stage soon.

“Hey family, I woke up yesterday and tested positive for COVID-19,” he wrote on Instagram, sharing a clip of himself playing a somber piano piece in an empty theater.

“To protect my family, my friends and our loyal fans, I will be absent from the @colbertlateshow and unfortunately will also have to postpone the Carnegie Hall premiere of AMERICAN SYMPHONY, which – as many of you know – I have worked for for years .

“I put my heart and soul into this work and I’m so disappointed that I can’t get through it right now, but one day it WILL happen.

“Thank you to my incredible team and all the musicians who have accompanied me on this journey.

“I look forward to the day when I can share the stage with you all again and share this work with the world. Stay safe out there.”

The 35-year-old musician picked up five Grammy Awards from 11 nominations, including the coveted gong for Album of the Year for his 2021 album We Are, at the 64th annual ceremony last month.

His success at one of music’s biggest nights has helped push his work – which spans multiple genres including R&B, jazz, American roots music and classical – into the spotlight.

He will make his acting debut in an upcoming remake of The Color Purple, playing Grady in the new Warner Bros. adaptation of Alice Walker’s Pulitzer Prize-winning novel of the same name.
