Joni Mitchell Receives Gershwin Award for Popular Song

Joni Mitchell will receive the Library of Congress Gershwin Award for Popular Song.
Less than a year after being named Person of the Year at the Grammys, Mitchell will return to Washington to honor the lifetime achievement.
The 79-year-old is considered one of the greatest singer-songwriters of her time, with her most famous works including Chelsea Mornings, The Big Yellow Taxi and The Man. freedom in Paris.

“The music and art of Joni Mitchell has left a distinct impression on American and international culture, transcending folk music with a distinctive voice whose songs will stay with us for many years to come. era,” Librarian of Congress Carla Hayden said in a statement.
“Joni Mitchell’s music is filled with artists and music lovers all sing her tunes.”
Mitchell, who lives in Los Angeles, will be honored March 1 at a tribute concert that will air March 31 on PBS stations.
Previous Gershwin Prize winners include Sir Paul McCartney, Stevie Wonder and Carole King.
“This is a very prestigious award,” Mitchell said in the statement. “Thank you for honoring me.”
Mitchell was named MusiCares Person of the Year before last year’s Grammy Awards, and after a nearly two-decade absence, she returned to the stage in August and plans to perform again this June.
