Jose Mourinho has stated that ahead of Erik ten Hag’s arrival at Old Trafford, Manchester United are no longer ‘expected to win trophies’.

Mourinho was the last manager to bring silverware to Old Trafford as United failed to replicate the successful 2016/17 season they enjoyed under his Portuguese. The ex-Chelsea boss won the Community Shield, Carabao Cup and Europa League in his first season at United; Louis van Gaal (FA Cup) is the only other manager to have guided United to victory since Sir Alex Ferguson resigned in 2013.

Despite his stunning start at Manchester, things went awry and Mourinho was axed after just two and a half years at the helm. After being sacked from his next job at Tottenham, the 59-year-old has rebuilt his reputation at Roma and is preparing for the Europa Conference League final – the Italian club’s first European final in 31 years. United, meanwhile, are still trying to find a winning formula and are planning a summer makeover under Ten Hag.

There have been some suggestions that Mourinho is too outdated for modern football, but the icon and Carlo Ancelotti – who was hit with similar criticism after his time at Everton – have silenced their critics. And Mourinho has hinted the problem lay with her former clubs rather than herself.

He said: “I think the problem with Carlo Ancelotti was that you are not going to win the Champions League as Everton manager. And with me, you know, people saw me taking jobs where they thought I could win trophies, but they weren’t jobs where we were expected to lift trophies.

“But when you have such a successful career, so to speak, cyclically, you can expect that, people can say that. Personally, I’m not worried about that [being replaced by younger coaches]. I don’t think and focus on generations, I focus on quality.”

He continued: “It’s a question of quality, of motivation, of passion. If you don’t have passion, you’re dead. Without pressure in the run-up to big games, you’re at the end. I know myself very well, I know Carlito very well too, but there are other examples that we could do.

“But we’re the ones who will say it when we want to stop, and I’m afraid people will have to wait a long time for me to say it’s over!”

Eyebrows were raised when Mourinho took over the Roma job after being axed by Tottenham, but the former Inter Milan boss has enjoyed a successful year at Rome. And while he admitted he “enjoys the project,” he quashed any talk of a Ferguson-like tenure.

Mourinho added: “Sir Alex Ferguson has coached Manchester United for more than 20 years I believe. I’m 59 years old now, so plus 20 years would be 79 – probably a bit too much! It would be difficult. Maybe until I’m 70.

“But I understand your question. I really like it here. You can see that, you can feel that. I accepted a project with a different profile than my previous ones, it was a three-year project. We’ll see about it.” I’ll be staying here for three years, I’m not even thinking of leaving sooner.

“But sometimes projects over time get closer to what you think and sometimes they get further away from it, but football is today. So I’m here now, I’ll be here next season and then we’ll see what happens. That’s the most honest way to answer your question.”
