Josh Warrington has been hospitalized after suffering a suspected fractured jaw and broken hand in his world title win over Kiko Martinez.

Warrington dominated the Spanish champions from the first bell, dropping them in the opening round before ending the fight in the seventh. By regaining the belt, Warrington becomes a two-time champion after relinquishing the title 15 months ago.

He was brutally KO’d by Mauricio Lara before their second-round rematch with the Mexican was called off. He got a surprise attempt at redemption when Martinez KO’d Kiko Galahad last November and opted to defend his belt against Warrington.

And the Leeds man proved his critics wrong with a whirlwind show in front of his raucous army of fans, catapulting himself back to the top of his weight class and ending a miserable 2021 in style. A vicious right hook landed flush on Martinez’s jaw and sent him to the canvas in the opening round. He stood after counting to eight before a cut appeared above his left eye, near his nose.

The defending champions came under serious pressure in the second round as the Leeds crowd cheered on Warrington for the early victory they had hoped for. But Martinez has proven he’s as tough as a walnut. He weathered the storm and was trying to get back in the fight just as Warrington went off the pedal.

Warrington had his opponent back on the ropes in the fourth round and a series of pumping rights in the fifth brought the arena back up to full volume. Martinez slowly came out for sixth as his injured eye was tended and finished the lap with an appreciative nod after being caught by another ramrod right at the end.

Warrington felt it was time and pounced on the Spaniard early in the seventh, catching him on the ropes and punching him to a halt before the referee stepped in to end the fight. The winner struggled through his post-fight injury before being taken to hospital for a check-up.
