Joshua vs. Usyk News LIVE: Press conference fallout ahead of Saudi Arabia fight

Oleksandr Usyk sings after an intense duel with Anthony Joshua

Anthony Joshua and Oleksandr Usyk are just two days away from their much-anticipated rematch in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, where “AJ” will look to reclaim his heavyweight titles from the undefeated Ukrainian.

Last September, at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in London, Usyk gave the Brit a full glimpse of winning the WBA, WBO, IBF and IBO belts. This made Usyk the defending two-weight champion, having previously reigned as the sole undisputed cruiserweight champion of the four-belt era. The 35-year-old’s pedigree is unquestionable and if Joshua is to dethrone Usyk he must do what no one has done before and defeat his Olympic gold medalist.

There has been a fuss over Joshua’s decision to add Robert Garcia to his coaching staff and the onus is on the American and Angel Fernandez – who are already part of AJ’s line-up – to work out a game plan to defeat Usyk on Saturday night. On Wednesday, Joshua and Usyk locked in a tense gaze after their pre-fight press conference with the weigh-in scheduled to take place on Friday. Here’s the latest news as the buildup of Usyk vs Joshua 2 continues:

The obvious question is whether the Rage On The Red Sea is Joshua’s last chance to arrange an in-ring meeting with Tyson Fury, who – to the disbelief of most – claims he had his last dance.

Most would answer yes, but when Joshua, 32, was KO’d by Andy Ruiz Jr. three years ago, the feeling was the same. Yet AJ responded with a mature performance in late 2019 to surpass Ruiz Jr. and reclaim his heavyweight belts. When the Brit lost them again, this time to Usyk last autumn, the likelihood of a Fury clash faded to a mere possibility and then – with Fury’s “retirement” having KO’d Dillian Whyte in April – an improbability.

And yes, if Joshua loses to Usyk again, it’s almost certain we’ll never see that all-British heavyweight unification fight. It will be the losing battle of this generation, at least in the UK.

If Joshua is indeed defeated again against the undefeated Ukrainian, the calls for his resignation will be loud and numerous – albeit unjustly. Because Joshua, as much as he seems seemingly engineered from birth and later molded by Hearn into the heavyweight champion, need not be defined by that status; Nor does his career need to be defined by a possible fight with Fury.

The selection process for Anthony Joshua’s new coach, which took the Brit across the pond, caused speculation and intrigue in equal measure. It became arguably the strangest rematch build-up narrative.

Eventually, Robert Garcia became the latest addition to Joshua’s team, the man tasked with reversing the outcome of last year’s showdown in London and doing what no coach did: find a way past Usyk. After Joshua’s longtime coach Rob McCracken retired from the 32-year-old’s coaching staff, Angel Fernandez will take on a more prominent role alongside Garcia.

But make no mistake, any credit or blame for the outcome of Joshua’s rematch with Usyk is placed on the shoulders – there they are again – of Garcia and Joshua, much more than Fernandez’s.

Oleksandr Usyk performed a Ukrainian anthem about the fight for independence after warning Anthony Joshua he faces a continuation of the dismantling he suffered in their first clash.

Dressed in a traditional Cossack outfit for Wednesday’s direct press conference, the unified world champion stayed on stage after confronting Joshua to sing “Oi u luzi chervona kalyna”.

The 1875 Call to Arms was inspired by Ukraine’s struggle for independence in the 18th century and is now chanted as a show of defiance in the face of Russian invasion.

Usyk served as a military volunteer in Kyiv before being told he would better represent his nation by successfully defending the WBA, IBF and WBO titles he took from Joshua almost a year ago.
