Judges hand out life sentences to dangerous drivers starting this week

Judges will hand out life sentences to street killers starting Tuesday.

The new maximum penalty replaces the previous 14 years for manslaughter by dangerous driving.

And careless drivers who kill under the influence of alcohol or drugs also face life behind bars.

The harsher penalties are intended to reflect the misery that fatal driving can entail.

Justice Secretary Dominic Raab said: “Too many lives have been lost and families devastated by reckless behavior behind the wheel.

“We changed the law so those responsible now face the possibility of life behind bars.”

In 2021 there were 568 offenses involving dangerous driving causing death or serious injury, the latest figures available. That was 53 fewer than in the previous year.

Also from Tuesday, Mr Raab is set to allow deaf people to sit on juries with the help of British Sign Language interpreters.
