Judi Dench misses her late husband in a new interview with Louis Theroux

Dame Judi Dench remembered her late husband Michael Williams and his great sense of humor in an intimate interview with Louis Theroux.

The stage and screen veteran discussed her husband’s death in 2001 as she looked back on her life and long career with the screenwriter.

The pair met at Dame Judi’s Surrey home on the second episode of the new BBC Two series, Louis Theroux Interviews.

Speaking of her marriage to actor Williams, whom she married in 1971, she said it was “impossible to say” what was the foundation of their successful marriage.

“Mostly (his) sense of humour,” she said.

“Michael laughs and when he laughs he often cries. I think mainly, of course interested in the same things, but what do I mean? Can not say.

The couple bought their house after a series of lucrative commercials for Clover Butter, in which they starred together.

Dame Judi became emotional while discussing her husband’s death from lung cancer, admitting “I’m not good at it”.

“I was in New York and they said he was unwell so my agent flew away and we went back to Concorde the next day,” she said.

“And it was delayed and we got off the plane and came back and they said ‘oh it’ll be fine’ and we got on another plane and the same thing happened.

“So it took us a long time to get back, but we’re back, and back here so we’re all in the house together and that’s really, really good.”

The actress added that she immersed herself in work after Williams’ death to “use a bit of energy instead of thinking about it”.

Along with her extensive career on the stage with many Shakespearean roles, Dame Judi is also known for many film roles including the famous James Bond character M.

She played the role in eight Bond films starting with GoldenEye in 1995 until her final guest appearance in Specter in 2015.

She revealed that it was Williams who encouraged her to take on the role, telling her “you have to do it, I have to live with a Bond woman”.

Speaking of her first appearance as M, alongside Pierce Brosnan, she said: “I hope Pierce won’t mind when I speak, but we were both very scared, suddenly taking on taking on those two roles, it’s very demanding and one is very nervous about it. . “

As the series goes on, Theroux is also set to get up close and personal with other big names in the entertainment industry, including Rita Ora and Bear Grylls (BBC/PA).

Dame Judi also admits that acting is “extremely hard” and that she hasn’t seen a lot of her own films “because I would be excited”.

The interview also briefly addressed the issues surrounding disgraced movie mogul Harvey Weinstein, with the actress saying she had never experienced his dark side.

“I don’t know any other side, though I don’t have immense compassion for anyone on the other side,” she said.

As the series goes on, Theroux is also set to get up close and personal with other big names in the entertainment industry, including Rita Ora and the Bear Grylls.
