June Brown, actress who played EastEnders’ Dot Cotton, dies aged 95


Eastenders star June Brown, best known for her role as the chain-smoking Dot Cotton, died at her home in Surrey on Sunday, aged 95, with her family by her side.

n EastEnders The spokeswoman said: “We are deeply saddened to announce that our beloved June Brown, OBE, MBE sadly passed away last night.

“June created one of the most iconic characters on Dot Cotton, not just on the soap opera but on British television, and having appeared in 2,884 episodes, June’s remarkable performances have created some of them EastEnders“most beautiful moments”

The actress’ 35-year run as an Albert Square mainstay began in 1985 before she left the show in 2020.

The veteran actress, who had a long career in television and theater, arrived at Albert Square shortly after the soap opened in 1985 and, apart from a hiatus between 1993 and 1997, has been a regular for more than three decades.

On January 31, 2008, she single-handedly starred in an episode called pretty babyin which she spoke about her life on a tape recorder for her husband to hear while he was in the hospital after suffering a stroke.

Mrs Brown served in the Women’s Royal Naval Service at the end of the Second World War and then left to train at London’s Old Vic Theater School, Lambeth.

Before joining EastEnders She had roles in Coronation Street, Doctor Who, minder and The statementand costume dramas The Duchess of Duke Street and Oliver Twist.

After joining Albert Square, she also starred in comedy Is not wrongdoing in 1997 and played Nanny Slagg in the BBC production of Gormenghast in 2000.

Ms Brown won several awards for her portrayal of Dot, including a lifetime achievement award at the British Soap Awards 2005.

In 2009, she was nominated for a Best Actress award at the TV Baftas for her standalone episode of the soap opera. In December 2021, she was made an OBE in the New Year Honors as she was recognized for her services to drama and charity.

She was previously awarded an MBE for services to drama and charity in the Queen’s Birthday Honors in 2008.

Mrs. Brown married her first husband, John Garley, in 1950.

After his death, she married actor Robert Arnold in 1958 and had six children with him.
