EastEnders star June Brown, best known for her role as Dot Cotton, has died aged 95, the BBC has announced.

Born in Needham Market, Suffolk in 1927, she went on to have a glittering showbiz career with success in film, theater and television.

She will be best remembered for her role as matriarch Dot Cotton on the long-running soap EastEnders.

She has played the Walford legend since 1985 and retired the popular character after 35 years in February as she is one of British television’s longest-serving artists.

In January 2008, she became the first and only soap actress to carry an entire episode alone.

The actress was originally recommended for the role by actress Leslie Grantham, who played Vic Landlord’s Dirty Den.

The beloved June served in the army. One of Harry and Louisa’s five children, she was evacuated to Wales during World War II, where she would later become a wren.

The star endured many tragedies. Her brother John died of old age only a few days after his birth. Two years later, her sister Marise died at the age of eight.

Later in life, the star’s first husband, John Garley, committed suicide in 1957 after a battle with depression. She remarried in 1958 and had six children with new love Robert Arnold.

Unfortunately, her second child died just 16 days after being born prematurely. Robert died in 2003 after a three-year battle with Lewy Bodies dementia.

June also appeared on rival soap Coronation Street before making a name for herself on the court. Breaking the news of her retirement, she told the Distinct Nostalgia podcast: “I don’t want an advance on EastEnders, I’ve left. I’m gone forever

‘I sent her to Ireland and she will stay there. I left EastEnders. I made a limerick. It’s a bit dirty. I went back to write a good story. Oh and woe, when I came back it had gone up in smoke.

“Well, that’s not a joke. I have a small part, a very small part. And that ended in a big wet fart. Alas, I will never return.”
