“Jurassic Newpark” – life-size dinosaurs check into the Irish hotel’s new themed attraction

Kilkenny may be associated with cats, but locals and visitors alike will soon be able to meet a more exotic species: dinosaurs.

‘Jurassic Newpark’ is a €250,000 interactive experience featuring life-size robotic dinosaurs moving and roaring at the Newpark Hotel in Kilkenny City.

The four-star hotel is bringing the “prehistoric habitat” to its 25-acre parkland starting late July, featuring several dinosaurs including the fearsome T-Rex, as well as a triceratops, a stegosaurus, a brachiosaurus and a velociraptor.

You might also spot some dinosaur eggs.

“I’m excited to announce our successful foray into paleo-genetics, a small skill we picked up during lockdown,” jokes General Manager Paul Beehan.

“Things have been going very well so far since they arrived on site – no raptor has escaped into the kitchen and the T-Rex has not swallowed any of our staff.”

Bookings for Jurassic Newpark open July 27th.

It is free for hotel guests, otherwise tickets cost €11 per person. Children under the age of two travel for free, family tariffs are available from €35.

Jurassic Newpark will see dinosaurs in enclosures and paddocks connected to accessible trails.

“Park Rangers” will give informative talks about the creatures and there will be photo ops along the way.

Preparations for the dino-themed attractions included extensive landscaping and planting to create “an authentic prehistoric feel,” according to the hotel.

Sourced in China, the dinosaurs are made of “a foamed material and are covered with a steel structure.”

The project will create 10 new jobs, it adds.

It follows the opening of ‘Dino Dash’, a 260m dinosaur-themed roller coaster that launched at Tayto Park earlier this year and can reach speeds of 50km/h.

Kilkenny’s dinosaurs will join the existing animals at the hotel’s farm, including llamas, alpacas, emus, highland cattle, ducks and guinea fowl…although hopefully they won’t be snacking on them.

Guests who have booked for the coming weeks can get a preview as they explore the Flynn Hotel Collection’s existing nature and fairy tale trails.

The hotel is known for its family-friendly creativity, with other amenities including an adventure playground, go-kart track, swimming pool, game room, and kids’ club with yoga, bear building workshops, and movie nights.

Family holidays this summer start from €648 for two adults and two children, staying two nights in a Classic room on a B&B basis, one evening meal included.
