Jurgen Klopp says Liverpool will be without Joel Matip and likely Thiago Alcantara on Saturday First League collision at home west ham.

Central defender Matip was rested for Wednesday FA Cup victory at home in Norwich Citybut he has since contracted an illness.

Thiago was pushed out of last Sunday’s Carabao Cup final with a hamstring injury picked up warming up and while not considered too serious he is likely to sit out David Moyes’ men’s visit.

Klopp added that Curtis Jones, who was substituted at half-time against Norwich, and Naby Keita, who picked up an injury at Wembley, are also unsure about playing against the Hammers.

“I’m pretty sure Thiago isn’t available,” Klopp said at his press conference on Friday.

“Curtis isn’t bad, but good enough for tomorrow?” We will see. Matip is sick, not Covid.”

Joel Matip will not play for Liverpool against West Ham while Naby Keita is in doubt

As for Keita, the German added he “don’t know” if the midfielder would make it.

Liverpool start second in the Premier League, six points behind leaders Manchester Citywho face Manchester United On Sunday.

After winning the Carabao Cup and advancing in the FA Cup, increasing talk of a quadruple has no impact on the club, according to the German.

“The physical part is hard. The big challenge is (to stay fresh),” said Klopp.

“We had to change (10 players) on Wednesday, but we got through and are now playing again against a top-class team three days later.

“We make a decision mentally, we want to be as successful as possible.”

Adding to his team selection headache, he said: “I’m long enough to know how I want my team to play.

“The real problem was the squad for the final, because five substitutions were great.

“It helps football, an intense game v Chelsea. We need to discuss this until it happens because it’s so necessary.”

Meanwhile, defender Ibrahima Konate, who is likely to replace Matip on Saturday, has made it his mission to retain a place in the Liverpool squad and not get too crushed when he’s not playing.

Ibrahima Konate is likely to play in place of Matip

“Imagine, OK, you’re angry, you’re sad, but two days after that you have to play and you’re not ready in your head and then you make a bad game,” said the defender said Liverpoolfc.com.

“It would be like saying to the coach, ‘Yes, I know why I’m not playing.’

“You have to be ready every time you play [well]you put some problems in the coach’s head and that’s good for the group and for you.

“If you don’t play after that, you’re against yourself because OK, you’re going to talk to the coach [and ask] why you don’t play and he will explain it to you, but that won’t change [anything].

“Then you have to fight, you have to work more and when you’re not playing you have to think and ask yourself [why].

“When you have the answer to your question, you work on this and this and this, and after that your time will come. With work, your time will surely come.”
