Jurgen Klopp tells Liverpool players to ignore what title rivals Man City are doing

Jurgen Klopp urged Liverpool to block Manchester City after Sadio Mane kept his quadruple dream alive.

he striker’s 22nd goal of the season resulted in a struggling 2-1 comeback win at Aston Villa to move level on points with City at the top of the Premier League.

Jurgen Klopp’s side lie behind City on goal difference, while their title rivals are three points clear again on Wednesday when they travel to Wolves.

Joel Matip quickly leveled the visitors after Douglas Luiz’s early goal, and Mane’s winner put the Reds ahead of Saturday’s FA Cup final against Chelsea.

Klopp said: “We’re not wasting energy and we think hopefully they (Man City) will lose.

“Now we really need to recover and play the FA Cup final because there is no mercy. The situation to qualify for the final is huge.

“Their quality and mentality and character are the reason why we are where we are. I’m not surprised they can do something like this, but I don’t take it for granted.

“We had an outstanding and incredible mentality. We needed time to get into the game and our opponent was there at the beginning, really aggressive.

“In the last 10 or 15 minutes we really said we control the game, so we had to do it. We scored a second incredible goal.

“Luis (Diaz) was sensational and Sadio made the world of it. Then we had to dig deep, they had moments and a big chance with (Danny) Ings.

Klopp started with Mo Salah on the bench and they fell behind after three minutes when Luiz opened the scoring after Alisson saved his header.

But the hosts’ lead lasted just three minutes during a crazy opening, and Matip pricked after Tyrone Mings failed to convert Trent Alexander-Arnold’s free-kick.

Liverpool were balanced in defence, but fragile, and Alisson escaped some nervous moments when he was slammed into John McGinn’s cross by Danny Ings and almost gave possession to Ollie Watkins.

They also lost Fabinho to a hamstring injury mid-half, with Klopp unsure if the midfielder will be fit for the FA Cup final.

“I don’t know, he felt a muscle. He’s quite positive but I’m not sure what to think of that,” he added.

Philippe Coutinho shot over the goal before Naby Keita missed a glorious chance when he missed his shot from seven yards unmarked.

Liverpool knew they had to find a winner and Alexander-Arnold’s free-kick went wide before Kostas Tsimikas’ brilliant save against Watkins failed after the break.

But the coveted goal came 25 minutes from time when Luis Diaz was allowed a cross from the left and Mane shot in.

The visitors were yet to endure a late push from Villa and after Alisson had blocked Ings the striker saw a goal rightly disallowed for offside.

“We have to take those big moments that we created and we’re a little frustrated that we didn’t score more than once,” said Villa manager Steven Gerrard.

“We were ambitious, bold, bold and went toe-to-toe with one of the best teams in the world. It was a daunting challenge and a huge challenge, but I’m very proud of what they’ve accomplished. We knew we had to suffer at times against this team.

“We are disappointed with the two goals we conceded and frustrated that we were no longer able to hold the lead. I can’t ask for more from the players. We made Liverpool work extremely hard.”

Gerrard also showed his frustration with referee Jon Moss’ performance after the official upset both sides at Villa Park.

“I hope the referee’s performance will be taken into account,” he added.
