A rather unusual group of Liverpool faces were named on the substitutes’ bench Jürgen Klopp rotated his team in the 1-0 win in the Premier League newcastle on Saturday noon.

One thing Liverpool One thing that could benefit is the squad density as they know they can call a strong team regardless of manager changes. Mohamed Salah, Trent Alexander-Arnold and Fabinho received the rest this time before taking on Villarreal in the Champions League semi-final second leg, with Joe Gomez, James Milner and Naby Keita starting.

And each of them made a significant contribution to the team’s victory. Keita scored the only goal of the game, Milner was involved in the build-up, with a challenge to Fabian Schar to move the ball to Jota. While Gomez made a crucial intervention down the wing as the hosts attempted to counterattack.

The veteran Milner controlled the game in midfield and his experience was just what was needed in a game where a 1-0 result is always risky as the game could have gone either way. The hosts even saw Miguel Almiron try for offside and if the goal had stood then things could have ended differently.

Footballers want competition, they want minutes to challenge themselves and become better players on the pitch. This Liverpool side can offer that. No matter which team the German boss sets up, the spirit remains the same: to leave everything on the pitch.

Admittedly, Newcastle made life difficult for them and suffered a very close defeat. But by the same token, Liverpool got the job done, they overcame those obstacles like many others they’ve had this season and it’s kept them in contention to fight to quadruple – at least for one more game.
