Jurors ‘hopelessly deadlock’ leading to wrong trial of actor Danny Masterson

A judge has declared a trial of error after jurors became “hopefully deadlocked” in the case of That ’70s Show actor Danny Masters, who was charged with three rapes.

Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Charlaine Olmedo ordered jurors to take a Thanksgiving break and resume deliberations after they told her on November 18 that they could not come to an agreement on the charges. rape after a month-long trial in which the Church of Scientology. played a supporting role.

Masterson, 46, is accused of raping three women, including an ex-girlfriend, at his Hollywood Hills home between 2001 and 2003.

He pleaded not guilty and his attorney said all acts were consensual.

All three women were members of the church at the time, and Masterson remains one.

“I find the jurors hopelessly stuck,” the judge announced after asking if the court could do anything to bring them closer to a unanimous decision.

The jurors said they voted seven times on Tuesday and Wednesday without being able to reach a consensus on any of the three counts.

The jury foreman said only two jurors voted to convict the first time, four voted to convict a second time, and five voted to convict a third time.

Jurors were forced to start their deliberations from scratch on Monday when two people had to be fired because of Covid-19. They deliberated for two days but still could not reach a verdict.

The result was a serious setback for prosecutors and for three women who said they were seeking justice was long overdue.

The proceedings come amid a series of cases on both coasts of MeToo significance, including the Harvey Weinstein trial in Los Angeles just down the hallway from Masterson’s.

In New York, Kevin Spacey won a sexual misconduct lawsuit initiated by actor Anthony Rapp while in a separate civil lawsuit, a jury asked director and screenwriter Paul Haggis paid $10 million (£8.3 million).
