Jury finds man guilty of murder of rapper Nipsey Hussle

A jury found a 32-year-old man guilty of first-degree murder in the 2019 shooting of rapper Nipsey Hussle.

A Los Angeles County grand jury also found Eric R Holder Jr guilty of two counts of willful manslaughter instead of two counts of attempted murder as prosecutors were hunting for two other men who were shot at the scene.

Holder, wearing a blue suit and mask, stood up in the small courtroom next to his lawyer as the verdict was read. He had no obvious reaction.

The judges deliberated for about six hours over two days before delivering a verdict.

The ruling ends a legal story that has dragged on for more than three years and a trial often delayed because of the pandemic.

Holder and Hussle have known each other for years – they grew up members of the same South Los Angeles street gang – when a chance meeting outside the rapper’s Los Angeles clothing store led to an explosion. gun and his death.

The evidence against Holder abounds, from eyewitnesses to surveillance cameras from local businesses documenting his arrival, the shooting and his departure.

His lawyer did not even deny that he was the shooter, but urged jurors to convict him of a lesser charge of voluntary manslaughter.

The shooting followed a conversation the two men had about rumors that Holder had acted as an informant for the authorities.

Holder’s attorney Aaron Jansen said that being publicly accused of being “snitch” by a celebrity like Hussle brought “passionate enthusiasm” in Holder that kept him from committing first-degree murder.

Mr Jansen told jurors on Thursday: “This was a provocation that aroused rage and strong emotion.

Deputy District Attorney John McKinney argued during the trial that Holder and everyone else in the conversation before Hussle’s death were so calm that the “groping” conversation could not have been the primary motive, and that Holder must have had some prior jealousy or hatred towards Hustle.

Mr McKinney told jurors that the nine minutes between the conversation and the shooting allowed more than enough time to predetermine murder, a requirement for first-degree murder.

The jury apparently agreed.

Hussle, legal name Ermias Asghdom, has died aged 33. He had just released his major label debut album, which earned him his first Grammy nomination, when he was shot down.

He is a widely loved figure in Los Angeles, especially in the South LA area, where he grew up and stayed after rising to fame, buying properties and opening businesses.

“He wanted to change the neighborhood,” McKinney said in his closing argument.

“He still keeps his old friends. And the whole neighborhood loved him. They call him Neighborhood Nip.”

Hussle was mourned at a memorial at the arena then known as the Staples Center, and was held during a performance at the Grammy Awards attended by DJ Khaled and John Legend.
