With this week’s Platinum Jubilee, millions are gearing up for a celebration of all things British across the country.

But as people look forward to the historic celebrations of the Queen’s 70th jubilee, a new poll has found that a minority of Britons would actually rate the monarchy as the best in the country.

YouGov found the NHS and British country far more popular than the royals, which had just 9% support among young people.

A hit for generations, around 62% of respondents said the NHS was among the best things about Britain, while 61% voted for the rolling hills of Britain’s great outdoors.

Around 37% say British history and shared national pride are among the best things about the country today.

And despite the platinum jubilee shaking up Union Jacks across the country, just 34% say the monarchy and royal family are among Britain’s greatest things.

Respondents were deeply divided across generations, with half of those aged 65 and over (51%) saying Britain is among the best things, but just 9% of 18-24 year olds saying the same.

Other popular points of recognition were Britain’s free speech culture and its multicultural and diverse society.

Additionally, 22% of the public say Britain’s insularity is one of Britain’s best features.

The decline is largely due to a shift in attitudes among the younger demographic – in 2012, 40% of 18-24 year olds said the monarchy was one of the best things about the country. Since then, it’s down a massive 31%.

National pride has also diminished significantly from its standing as an admired quality of modern Britain – in 2012 51% of the public ranked it among the best things about the nation. Now the percentage is only 37%.
