‘Just hoping for the best – fingers crossed’ – Irish student Racheal Diyaolu on his way to the Polish border after the rescue mission

Student Carlow Racheal Diyaolu is currently traveling by car to the Polish border after an evacuation attempt to get her out Ukraine failed over the weekend.

A teenage medical student has become trapped in the university city of Sumy, which has been heavily bombarded by Russian troops recently.

This morning, Ms. Diyaolu and a group of students were driven out of town by two Scottish men.

Her sister Christiana said they contacted the men known as “Gary and Joe” through their TikTok page “ready2rocklandcaping” and the men agreed to take Rachel and her friend away. Sumy.

Joseph McCarthy has regularly posted video updates on their social media page about their efforts to get people out of the war-torn country.

“They were trying to do that yesterday and unfortunately on the way to Sumy they ran into some Russian soldiers who weren’t happy with their trip, and they shot at them and basically halted the whole thing. mission set,” Christiana Diyaolu told RTÉ’s Irish Morning programme.

“Fortunately, they were able to find an alternative route into Sumy and stayed there overnight and then resumed that mission this morning.”

Christiana confirmed that the convoy carrying her sister was heading for the western city of Liviv, nearly 1,000 kilometers away.

Speaking on the same program, Racheal Diyaolu said the journey took 17 hours normally, but they expected to take at least 20 hours given the current circumstances.

She said the fighting in Sumy had gotten worse in recent days and she was forced to leave behind many of her friends and most of her belongings.

“I’m fine, just trying to keep my spirits up and we’ll make it to Poland,” she said.

“I haven’t even been able to try to leave for the last week or so. There is no road that I know of that can safely get me out of the city and to the border. This is my second migration attempt in the last two days. ”

Her sister Christiana added that her family is very relieved that Racheal has finally left Sumy and that they will meet her in Poland if needed and then take her home to Carlow.

“We are very happy and just hope for the best – crossed fingers.

“We are ready to go to Poland as soon as we know she is there and bring her home.”
