A new report on how hidden inflammation is damaging our immune response, suggests that the vitamin C in orange juice may help play a protective and therapeutic role in our health. .
Professor Philip Calder, co-author of the report and Professor of Nutritional Immunology at the University of Southampton explained its therapeutic role.
“Vitamin C affects inflammation by regulating cytokine production, and we know that too much cytokine can wreak havoc on inflammation.
“Vitamin C also helps increase antibody levels by supporting the development of T and B lymphocytes, which are types of white blood cells that promote and direct our immune response,” he said.
Vitamin C is found in many foods like citrus fruits, bell peppers, and even white potatoes.

You can also get a vitamin C supplement if you think you’re not getting enough from your diet.
The NHS says that adults aged 19 to 64 need 40mg of vitamin C a day.
It cannot be stored in the body, so you need to make sure to include foods containing vitamin C in your daily diet.

The report by Dr Buxton and her team shows that many Britons are not aware of the problems chronic inflammation can cause.
A quarter said chronic inflammation affects the body’s ability to fight infections, and more than a third said it can cause fatigue.
One in three also said it could lead to poor metabolic health.
Dr Ruxton added: “Focus on increasing our vegetable and fruit intake to eight days a day, which may include a daily glass of orange juice, minimizing stress and staying away from inflammatory foods rich in saturated fats and starches are some simple steps that everyone can start with.”
