Kanye West ends contract with Gap after two years for ‘material non-compliance’

Kanye West is ending his relationship with The Gap after two years.

A lawyer for West, who goes by the name of Ye, said a letter had been sent to the clothing chain to terminate the contract between Gap and West’s Yeezy company.

The clash comes just over a year after Yeezy’s first item – a blue down jacket – hit Gap stores. The deal was announced to much fanfare in June 2020.

The letter states that Gap has failed to fulfill its obligations under the pact, including distributing merchandise to Gap store locations and setting up dedicated YZY Gap stores.

“Gap gave Ye no choice but to terminate their cooperation agreement due to Gap’s material non-compliance,” said Nicholas Gravante, West’s attorney at Cadwalader Wickersham and Taft.

“They had diligently tried to resolve these issues both directly and through an attorney with Gap. He got nowhere.”

Gravante said Gap’s failure to meet the terms of the contract was costly. He said West plans to start opening Yeezy retail stores.

Gap confirmed the pact ended in a memo to his staff.

“Put simply…while we share the vision of bringing quality, trend-led, and useful design to all people through unique Omni experiences powered by Yeezy Gap, the way we work together to achieve that vision is not aligned,” Mark Breitbard, president and chief executive officer of Gap Brand, told employees in the memo.

“And we decide to end the partnership.”

The company plans to continue selling the Yeezy Gap products in the pipeline.

West has taken to social media to criticize Gap and Adidas AG, where he has a similar deal. Adidas declined to comment.

The San Francisco retailer had hoped the partnership with West would resonate with customers at a time of declining sales. For Yeezy, being in more than 1,100 Gap stores worldwide would have put its brand in front of more people.

West has a history with Gap. As a teenager he worked in one of his shops in Chicago. And he told Vanity Fair magazine back in 2015 that he wanted to be the brand’s creative director.
