Kanye West faces £221million lawsuit over George Floyd death comments on podcast

Kanye West will face a $250million (£221million) lawsuit filed by George Floyd’s family following the rapper’s recent comments about his death.

Lawyers representing the family issued a cease and desist letter to West, saying his comments were a “vile attempt to devalue George Floyd’s life and to profit from his inhumane death.”

It comes after the rapper appeared on US podcast Drink Champs, where he claimed Mr Floyd was killed by a fentanyl overdose, contrary to a coroner’s evidence.

Mr Floyd, a black man, died in 2020 after police officer Derek Chauvin knelt on his neck for nine minutes in Minneapolis, Minnesota – footage of which was shared online around the world.

His cause of death was ruled manslaughter, sparking protests around the world. Chauvin was convicted of murder and manslaughter and sentenced to 22.5 years in prison in 2021.

A statement shared with the PA news agency read: “During the podcast interview, Kanye West made malicious untruths about George Floyd to capitalize on Mr Floyd’s horrific death and his family’s trauma.”

Attorney Pat D. Dixon III added: “Kanye’s comments are a repugnant attempt to ignore George Floyd’s life and capitalize on his inhumane death.

“We will hold Mr West accountable for his flagrant remarks against Mr Floyd’s legacy.”

The mother of Mr Floyd’s daughter, Roxie Washington, plans to file the multimillion-dollar lawsuit alleging “harassment, embezzlement, defamation and infliction of emotional distress,” the statement said.

“The interests of the child come first,” said attorney Nuru Witherspoon, a partner at The Witherspoon Law Group, in the statement.

“George Floyd’s daughter is re-traumatized by Kanye West’s comments and it creates an unsafe and unhealthy environment for her.”

It comes after West sparked further controversy after appearing at an event at Paris Fashion Week wearing a t-shirt that read ‘White Lives Matter’.
