Karim Benzema Stresses that he “doesn’t play football to become the best in the world” after being dubbed Europe’s leading striker for his exploits on Wednesday night.
The Frenchman, 34, scored a hat-trick at Stamford Bridge to help real Madrid secure a 3-1 win against Chelsea in the first leg of theirs Champions League Collision. The quarter-final second leg takes place in the Spanish capital on Tuesday evening.
Benzema’s reaction to praise is different than Cristiano Ronaldo’s. the Manchester United Icon confirmed his Desire to win the most Ballon d’Ors in history in 2018 as he wants to be remembered as the greatest player of all time.
Benzema is now one of the favorites for this year’s Ballon d’Or, but he didn’t seem overly enthusiastic about the honour. “I don’t play football to be the best in the world, I play for nights like this,” said the experienced striker after Wednesday night’s performance.
Asked by Piers Morgan what record he would like to set before retiring in 2018, Ronaldo said: “Most golden balls [Ballon d’Or] in the history of football. I’m going to love it and I think I deserve it… I know I’m one of the greatest in football history.”
Benzema and Ronaldo forged a famous partnership at Real between 2009 and 2018, winning 16 trophies – including four Champions League titles. Benzema played the supporting role at Allianz, scoring 192 goals compared to Ronaldo’s tally of 450.

However, in the four seasons since Ronaldo’s departure, Benzema has scored 124 – and there are still a few weeks left in the current tenure. The former Lyon native is enjoying the most successful season of his career to date, scoring 37 goals in 36 games.
“Karim Benzema, if they don’t put his name on the Ballon d’Or I would be surprised,” said the Manchester United hero Rio Ferdinand. “He was magic. Last draw he was great and got a hat trick. Tonight he did the same and got another hat trick.”
“That man made the difference, yes, they got their tactics right with Vinicius [Junior] right out and pin [Andreas] Christensen back. But he put away the chances when they came and sent them off beautifully. What a master class.”
Ferdinand added: “That’s the end of the business and he [Benzema] still scoring goals. He has propelled his team to the top of the league, they are 12 points clear. He’s the talisman, he’s the leader now, and he’s stepped out of the shadows Cristiano Ronaldo.
“We mentioned before the game that we can sit in the back with that humility. As soon as that opportunity arose, he came out of the shadows for this team and took control. In all aspects of his game he’s gone up another level.
“To me he is the best number 9 on the planet. we can talk about it [Robert] Lewandowski, great player. Harry Kane has returned to the form we all knew, a great player. This guy is on a different level right now. He’s phenomenal.”
