Premier League clubs have previously voted against increasing the number of substitutes allowed to five, with Karren Brady speaking out against mid-season changes
Karren Brady insists it is ill-advised to increase the number of substitutions from three to five while the season is still underway.
There were calls for them First League to increase the number of changes allowed during the 90 minutes. Votes were held but supporters were overwhelmed by those who wanted it to remain at three despite the majority of Europe’s top leagues allowing five substitutions.
Liverpool Boss Jurgen Klopp has been a big advocate of increasing the number, citing the number of injuries as the reason. The German believes more rotation will improve players’ fitness, which would be beneficial for all 20 clubs.
Brady who is heavily involved west hambelieves it’s ‘never a good idea to make changes mid-campaign’, which is one of the reasons clubs have not backed the motion.
She has enrolled The sun : “We voted three times on increasing the number of substitutions to five. Each time it was turned down, largely because the rule change was proposed after the season had started and a radical change mid-season is never a good idea. For some clubs there are other reasons to vote against.”
Five subs are allowed in the FA Cup and in the Champions League. Klopp has capitalized on his strong Liverpool squad in these competitions, making a quadruple change in the recent win over Nottingham Forest. Just after the hour mark he was able to introduce Jordan Henderson, Luis Diaz, Thiago and Takumi Minamino.

Brady admitted the number of subs would eventually increase to five, but it would only widen the gap between the country’s elite. She claimed, “But two extra steps into the unknown will soon be all but inevitable and the side effects unpredictable, except simply, the bigger the racquet, the greater the benefit.”
Klopp has hit out at such proposals. Burnley Boss Sean Dyche has strongly opposed five changes, claiming that the quality available to the larger teams would mean they are further ahead of the chasing group. However, the Liverpool manager doesn’t see it that way.
He has said in the past: “Honestly it has nothing to do with people saying it’s a tactical advantage [his argument]. Absolutely nothing. It’s absolutely not true that that gives us an advantage. Five Subs is a must-have for the future. It should be now, but at least for the future, because we have to make sure we give players the opportunity to save energy.”
