The 23-year-old actress makes her big screen debut this week – but her mum jokes she would have preferred her career to be in medicine
Actress Kate Beckinsale would have preferred her daughter Lily Sheen to become a surgeon instead of becoming an actress herself, Lily has revealed.
The young actress, 23, whose father is Welsh actor Michael Sheen, is set to make her big screen debut in upcoming action comedy The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent, playing the role of Addy, daughter of star actor Nick Cage ( loosely adapted from Nicholas Cage ).
But while both of her parents are supportive of her acting career and encourage her to “become the person I want to be,” mother Kate actually would have preferred it if Lily avoided the arts and went to medical school, she said.
“[My mum] would definitely have preferred to be a surgeon,” Lily said People Magazine.
“But I don’t think that was an issue! They wouldn’t want me to do any surgeries and I think she knows it!”
“Both of my parents would have accepted anything I did, which is incredibly lucky,” she added.
Speak with People MagazineLily said her experience with well-known actor parents was vastly different from that of her character Addy in The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent.
“Of course there are definitely similarities. But I think what really opened up the character for me as an actor was that I started noticing the differences,” she said.
“To see what my life would be like if my parents weren’t like that, if they weren’t so loving and supportive of me and the person I wanted to be.
“It was really exciting for me to be able to play and see this alternate reality version of myself and how my life could have been if things had been a little different.”
While Lily always wanted to get into acting, she was “stubborn” growing up, she said. So she tried to avoid anyone else’s assumption that she was going into acting and tried to focus on something else.
“[I] wanted to get away from the expectation that I might end up in film,” she said.[I] certainly wanted to act from a young age; It only took me a second to get there.”
As a young actress wannabe, Lily often shyed away from her parents’ advice, but now she appreciates everything they do for her.
She said, “When I was younger and more immature, I was more like, ‘I don’t want help.’ But I think I really appreciate now how lucky I was to have these parents and just have a helping hand through the industry.
“Not many people have understanding parents who respect art,” she added. “My parents are great at pushing me out and letting me fly and become the person I want to be. To become the actor I want to be.”
The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent will be released on April 22, 2022 in the UK
