A COVID patient who has spent 11 days in hospital cries with Kate Garraway as she is given the all-clear on a new BBC show.
The kindhearted Rozi, who appears on Tonight’s Your Body Uncovered, tells Kate she hopes her husband Derek recovers from the virus too.
She says, “In the fullness of time, I hope so derek come too. Even if he only manages half, it will be an improvement on now.”
He caught Covid very early in the pandemic and spent 374 days in hospital with the disease having a severe impact on his body.
Misty-eyed Kate tells Rozi that she wishes they could hug, but due to restrictions at the time of filming, they can’t.
Rozi contracted the virus over the summer after vacationing with her family.
She was eventually rushed to the hospital by her husband Jonny while struggling to breathe and she did not reappear for almost a fortnight.
She tells Kate: “I’ve never felt so bad in my life. I just thought I’d never get out of here.”
The granny is appearing on the BBC2 show tonight – which is giving people amazing visual representations of her condition – to see what’s happened to her lungs.
Kate says: “As I think you know my husband got sick at the beginning of the pandemic when they didn’t even know the effects on the body – many of them we are still discovering of course.
“What are you hoping for when you see the effects of Covid on your lungs?”
Rozi explains, “It’s going to help me come full circle so I can understand in a visual way what’s been happening to my body that’s been making me so sick.”
She is confronted with detailed augmented reality renderings of her own lungs, created using hospital scans, when her body was struck by a severe Covid infection.
Rozi gasps as she looks down at her lungs, which are full of bright orange ‘angry’ Covid.
The doctor who treated her at the hospital told her more than a quarter of her air sacs had filled with fluid, mucus and dead cells, making it difficult for her to breathe.
She says: “This is the most fascinating thing I’ve ever seen in my life.
“Oh my god, that’s so much.
“I don’t think I’ve ever felt so sick in my life. You can’t lift your limbs and you can’t walk, and the headache.”
Your body uncovered:
IN this groundbreaking series, Kate Garraway meets and guides patients with everyday illnesses alongside Dr. Guddi Singh through an immersive journey into her own body to better understand her illness.
The medical world is something Kate knows well. During the pandemic, she was pushed in when Her husband Derek developed Covid. She has experienced the frustration of not fully understanding what goes on in the human body.
26 million people in the UK suffer from a long-term illness. For many, these states feel hidden within their bodies, invisible to the naked eye. But now, with incredible new technology, we’re showing our patients what’s happening to them so they can better understand their condition
With the latest augmented reality, overlaying computer-generated images with our real-world vision, patients are given the opportunity for mind-blowing medical advice.
Six weeks after the biggest fight of her life, Rozi gets the all-clear.
She is told there is remarkably no scars or damage from her battle with the virus – she rushes out to break the happy news to Kate as the pair tears apart.
Kate says: “I see this is an amazing moment. I can’t hug you, but I will.”
The transmitter, 54, made a second documentary, Caring for Derek, about her husband’s continued recovery from the disease.
It aired in February and showed Kate using machines to help her husband in and out of bed, and other footage showed Derek in a wheelchair.
Kate said: “I’m very protective of people who see him as vulnerable, but this is the reality of life for people who care about them.”
