Kate broke down in tears as she admitted she still hoped for “a happy ending” for her and Derek, as she described the “terrible loneliness” she had to go through while taking care of him.

The GMB presenter explained that Derek appeared to have expressed his feelings a year earlier, but appeared to have “stepped back” as time went on.

Speaking in the documentary, she explained: “It seems that in terms of communication, he went back to this point last year.

“I mean he could have expressed fear, or anxiety, or all sorts of things this time last year, whereas now it’s yes or no, ‘don’t know.

“People have been really nice and said that I’m an inspiration, but I’m really struggling. I think it’s important for people to know that because I’m sure they’re struggling too. his life, in whatever way everything happened at them.”

Kate continued: “I think one of the worst things is the terrible loneliness you get when he’s here, but he’s not there.

Darcey’s card reads: “To the greatest dad in the world. Happy birthday, love you so much, I’m so proud of you.”

When he reached the end of the message, he burst into tears leading to his daughter comforting him before Billy also hugged his emotional father.
