Kate Garraway has been hit by another setback when the business she shares with her poor husband Derek Draper reportedly went bust.
The Good Morning Britain star, 54, recently spoke about her fears of “running out of money” over the treatment of her husband – who has been struggling with serious long-term effects and health problems from Covid since contracting the virus in 2020.
But now it looks like the Garraways are in for another blow after Kate lost her battle over Derek’s psychotherapy company Astra Aspera Limited, according to The Mail on Sunday.
The publication reports that Kate will announce in the coming days that the company is set to collapse.
A friend of the couple told the outlet: “Astra Aspera was Derek’s company first and foremost, he was the director. Kate was made director last February so she could try to keep it going.
“Kate did her best to do that while Derek was incredibly ill. However, he has not been able to work, his earnings are completely suspended and it is unlikely that he will return in the near future.
“Kate has other jobs at GMB and Smooth Radio but with their massively increased costs it hasn’t been able to keep the business going so it has to close.”
Other friends told the outlet that Derek’s rising health care costs left him with no other option and caused the family to suffer even more.
Kate has kept quiet about her financial worries as she has to pay for the round-the-clock care of her husband, whom she married in 2005.
Discussing the treatment Derek required, Kate told This Morning’s Holly and Phil during an appearance on the daytime show that the carers who have supported him and their family have been “extraordinary”.
Holly commented: “What has really impressed me is the amount of care he needs. Like it’s 24/7, isn’t it?”
“Yes and because of his extreme health needs he has 24 hour care so someone has to be up at night and someone has to be up during the day and I can’t be up 24 hours so it’s fantastic to have that.” replied Kate.
Phillip then referred to Kate and Derek’s trip to Mexico, where he underwent specialist treatment.
“It came at a really low point when I was like, ‘Oh god, this isn’t sustainable,'” Kate revealed.
“The system, I mean, I don’t think we can have 24-hour care forever, you know, there’s a point where the money runs out!
“It’s a big moment, I thought, ‘this is not sustainable’ and if there isn’t the structure there to help over the long term, what are we actually going to do? Because we cannot give him up.”
The Mirror have reached out to Kate’s rep for comment.
