Kate Garraway talks about the emotional moment she used her own body to knock her husband Derek down as he fell out of his wheelchair.
The mother of two was helping her husband, who was in a coma last year after contracting severe Covid, to his bed when he slipped.
Derek, who now requires 24-hour care, was unharmed thanks to his loving wife, who threw herself under him when he fell.
Although Kate bravely helps her husband, she is still trapped and struggles to revive him.
Speaking of the moment on ITV’s Caring For Derek, Kate said: “He came down and I was trying to say ‘are you okay?’, and he said ‘yep’ and then we couldn’t pull him up. “
“It was terrible, I feel so sorry for him, the kids went to see the fireworks. Billy is back and he’s amazing.”
Kate said her son Billy told his dad “he’s a bit picky”, to which Derek replied: “Yes, Bill.”
Speaking from her living room, Kate said: “And then Darcey went down the street and luckily with her friend’s parents and I said ‘let’s go see Polly’s dad’.”
Kate said she asked her husband of 15 years if he was okay when Darcey’s friend’s parents came to intervene.
“I said to Derek, ‘are you okay with this?’ And he looked me in the eye and he said, “Kate, I know my predicament, we need help.”
Polly’s father then got behind Derek and the three of them helped lift him up.
The former lobbyist was hospitalized with severe Covid illness in March 2020 and was subsequently placed in a medically induced coma.
He wakes up a few months later and can finally go home in April 2021.
Kate previously spoke on Piers Morgan’s Life Stories – the show she currently hosts – and said the virus has “devastated” Derek’s health.
His digestive system, kidneys, liver, heart and nervous system were all affected by Covid.
The father-of-two now requires 24-hour care and Kate has spoken of how he has a “heartbreaking feeling in his eyes”.
She told Piers: “Derek dreams about ‘before’, and every morning, it’s just that, it’s just horrible to see him wake up and realize where he is.”
“Each morning there was a kind of heartbreaking feeling in his eyes. You can only see it.
