Kate Lawler on ‘bottoming out’ with postpartum depression

Kate Lawler has shared about her struggle with postpartum depression, which forced her to “abandon” her baby at a particularly low point to stop herself from doing something she would regret. .

The TV personality, 41, welcomed daughter Noa, one, with partner Martin ‘Boj’ Bojtos, 38, last year.

In an interview about her debut novel Probably Baby with ITV’s Lorraine Kelly, the Big Brother star shared about struggling to deal with a newborn after birth, describing Her first year of motherhood was “the hardest thing I’ve ever done”.

“I don’t necessarily like every aspect of it,” she told Lorraine on Thursday. “Obviously there were moments where my heart burned when she first smiled at me and she cooed, but there are 24 hours in a day and for a lot of the early days of infancy, I struggled mentally and physically. recovering from the birth and I found it extremely difficult. ”

“I had terrible thoughts about what I could do to myself and to Noa.”



She added, “I just wanted to normalize those feelings that it’s okay to love your child in whatever way you are but not necessarily enjoy the day-to-day parenting experience.”

ITV host Lorraine replied: “It can be tough, even if you have a wonderfully understanding partner and you want this baby so much, it can still be overwhelming.”

Lorraine mentions the part of the book where Kate admits she had to leave her daughter in bed and go elsewhere in the house for fear of doing something she might “regret”.

“That was the moment I hit rock bottom, when I was in the deepest, darkest part of my postpartum depression,” Kate said.

“I talk a lot about postpartum depression, but you can’t get rid of these feelings. I had terrible thoughts about what I could do to myself and to Noa.

“You can’t get rid of those feelings and it’s really hard. I felt terrible because I even felt like I was close to doing something like that, but I didn’t.”

She continued: “I just feel for all the women in the past who have had those feelings and couldn’t share them.

“Social media was a rock for me during those nighttime breastfeeding sessions where I couldn’t hit my baby, didn’t breastfeed. I will open the app and there will be this army of women saying I have been through the same thing. “
