Kate Middleton chose to have her dress altered for the Top Gun: Maverick premiere to make her look more majestic – and she looked absolutely stunning, even though the sheer back panels had been removed
The Duchess of Cambridge’s fashion is always spot on and her looks rarely miss the mark, and the premiere of Top Gun: Maverick was no exception.
But to keep things royally appropriate, Kate often has her clothes tailored to remove sexy slits and revealing necklines.
Such was the case with the stunning off the shoulder floor-length dress by Roland Mouret, priced at £2,700, which she wore as she joined Top Cruise on Thursday’s red carpet.
While fans absolutely love her glamorous look, the French designer’s original dress, which hails from a previous season and is currently only available to rent, featured revealing sheer mesh panels at the back alongside a zip fastening. However, these were missing from Kate’s dress.

It seems that the Duchess made the subtle changes to give her outfit a more classic and elegant touch for the red carpet.
However, the rest of the dress was the same as the original – all black with a white bandeau neckline that revealed Kate’s bare shoulders. The dress is described as “elegantly off the shoulder to flatter your cleavage” on the Front Row website, where it is available to rent.
The description continues: “Crafted from sculpting stretch-crepe, this elegant design is darted at the waist and hips to create a gorgeous hourglass silhouette. We love the unexpected sheer mesh panel on the back.”
But of course, the Duchess chose to remove that detail.

Kate paired the monochromatic dress with an Alexander McQueen Black Velvet Crystal Embellished Box Clutch which cost £2,318.
For shoes, she donned her Prada Black Suede Wave Cutout Pumps, which she has worn on several occasions in the past.
The look was completed with a brand new pair of earrings, which were Tsar Star Stud and Drop Earrings by Robinson Pelhamm, costing £10,560.
Choosing to keep her makeup minimal and to accentuate her gorgeous natural features, Kate sported a little black eyeliner, black mascara, blush and a red lip. Her hair was straightened for the occasion.
Back in December 2019, Kate transformed an Alessandra Rich dress before wearing it for A Berry Royal Christmas.
She had the waist-high slit and revealing keyhole at the neckline removed before embellishing the dress’s neckline with a wide bow.
Other transformations are a little less obvious, with modest changes to clothing items including changes to the shape and style of sleeves.
