Kate Middleton surprised children in an intensive care unit in central London just hours after attending the Queen’s Thanksgiving service.

The Duchess of Cambridge spoke to parents, patients and staff at Evelina Children’s Hospital in Lambeth, south London on Friday.

It is believed she wanted to boost morale among those unable to attend the Queen’s platinum jubilee celebrations and, as royal patron of the hospital, wanted to unveil the work of medical staff in children’s health.

The children included seven-day-old Florence Clements, who has heart problems and wears a tiny knitted crown over various tubes and electrodes attached to her face.

Other hospital staff helped create colorful decorations to honor the anniversary.

These included a Corgi-shaped pennant and a sparkling crown over a cutout of the number 70, indicating the number of years since the Queen’s coronation.

Evelina Hospital is part of the Guys and St Thomas NHS Trust, which has been under the Royal Patronage of the Duchess since 2018.

Hospital staff shared the news of Kate’s visit on Saturday, along with pictures of the Duchess alongside Florence and her parents.

They wrote on Twitter: “We received a very special surprise last night! Our Patron, Her Royal Highness The Duchess of Cambridge, stopped by on a private visit to meet our patients, families and staff who were unable to attend the celebrations this weekend.

“Fortunately, the hospital was already adorned with Platinum Jubilee decorations made by some of the children and young people we serve. Thank you YRH for thinking of us.’

Kate’s visit focused on the hospital’s pediatric intensive care unit, although it provides a wide range of services from prenatal care to helping teenagers with complex medical conditions make the transition to adulthood.

The 40-year-old has frequently used her patronage to advocate for child healthcare across the Trust.

She is said to have spent the following day baking with her children George, Charlotte and Louis before heading to Wales with the two eldest and William for a special anniversary concert at Cardiff Castle.

The Cambridges shared pictures of Kate and her children baking cupcakes to be shared with residents at a street festival in the city on Sunday.
