Kate Middleton was once asked if she was her husband Prince William’s “assistant” and her answer could make her the most ordinary royal in The Firm.
The future Queen proved her sense of humour when she and future King William made an official visit to the Shire Hall Care Home in Cardiff last August.
And the royal couple got more than they bargained for when they were introduced to resident Joan Drew-Smith, 87.
Unfazed OAP pointed to Kate and asked Prince William: “Is that your assistant?”
But Kate handled the situation skillfully, smiling as she said to William: “Well, I’m your assistant.”

She added: “I’ve been a long time!”
As the Mirror reported at the time, the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge were stitched together in face-to-face meetings with residents of the care home, whom they entertained as virtual bingo callers in lock time.
The visit to the Cardiff care home comes in May 2020, three months after the royal couple spoke to staff and residents via video link and called out the numbers for their weekly match.
Introduced to Joan – who had previously made headlines that month when she said the royal bingo game was “not as good as it was supposed to be” – the Duke said: “Hi Joan, you have Remember we played bingo with you? You said we weren’t so good! ”
“Yes,” she replied. “You did a bloody bloody job.”
The royal couple, momentarily taken aback by her blunt assessment, burst into laughter.
But they received a kinder response from 95-year-old Margaret Stocks resident, virtual game winner.
“I enjoyed it,” she told them. “I haven’t played it before.”
“We, too!” The Duchess replied. “That’s why we’re so bad!”
“We liked it as much as you did,” said William. “It was a new experience for us.”
William and Kate both wore masks during their visit to the care home’s garden, making it difficult at times to make themselves heard.

William, wearing a blue cloth covering his face, told Joan: “We have to wear masks because of the virus, but sometimes you can’t see someone’s mouth so it’s hard to hear.”
“Is that your assistant?” Joan asked him, pointing at Kate.
“Well, I’m your assistant,” Kate laughed, placing a hand on her husband’s shoulder. “I have been a long time!”
The meeting took place during a march set up for the afternoon team as soon as the heavens opened.
“We’ve got the timing right!” The Duke said, who later told staff: “I love Joan, she’s amazing. If only people were as honest as she was.”
