Kate Moss reveals she was asked to go topless during the photo shoot aged 15

KATE Moss has revealed she was once asked to go topless during a photo shoot aged 15.

The model rose to fame in 1990 after a shoot for The Face magazine on Camber Sands beach near Rye.

Kate, now 48, has revealed she once “ran away” from a photo session for a bra catalog after a man asked her to go topless.

Speaking on Desert Island Discs, she said, “I had a horrible experience. I was probably only 15 and he said, “Take your top off,” and I took my top off. And I was very shy at the time because of my body.

“And he said, ‘Take off your bra,’ and I sensed something was wrong, so I got my stuff and ran away.

“I think it sharpened my instincts. I can spot a bug a mile away.”

Moss signed with the Storm modeling agency in 1988 and announced that she would be going alone to castings across London, armed with an A to Z book.

She also spoke about the shoot that made her famous, but admitted it was “painful” to revisit the memory.

The late photographer Corinne Day, with whom Moss often worked, took a series of photos of her for The Face magazine at Camber Sands when she was 16.

“That wrinkled nose on the cover made her say ‘snort like a pig’ to get this picture,” Kate revealed.

“And I would say, ‘I don’t want to snort like a pig,’ and she would say, ‘Snort like a pig and it’ll look good.'”

Moss recalled how she “cried a lot” during filming because she wasn’t comfortable being “naked.”

She said: “I didn’t want to take my top off. I was very, very insecure about my body and she kept saying, “If you don’t take your top off, I won’t book you for Elle” and I cried.

“It’s painful because she was my best friend and I really loved her – but she was a very difficult person to work with.

“But you know the pictures are amazing so she got what she wanted and I suffered for her but in the end they did me really really good. You changed my career.”

Moss also recalled shooting an underwear campaign for Calvin Klein with actor Mark Wahlberg, then known as Marky Mark, in 1992.

It was her first major ad campaign, but Moss recalled taking Valium to ease her anxiety before the shoot and feeling “vulnerable and scared” when she had to be topless during the shoot.

Moss said she passed modeling lessons to her 19-year-old daughter Lila, who she manages through her agency.

“I told her you don’t have to do anything you don’t want to do,” she said. “If you don’t want to do this shoot, if you don’t feel comfortable, if you don’t want to model, then don’t.

“I take care of my models. I make sure they’re with agents on shoots so there’s someone to say, “I don’t think that’s appropriate” when they’re being taken advantage of.

“I don’t know if that’s universal, but that’s what I can do.”
