Kate praises Britain’s ‘inspiring’ fashion talent at the awards ceremony

The Duchess of Cambridge has celebrated the “inspiring work” of Britain’s leading fashion talent as she presented a prestigious award to an up-and-coming designer.

ate presented the Queen Elizabeth II Award for British Design to Saul Nash, one of a new generation of young designers who are inclusive, sustainable and inspired by new sources.

Wearing an outfit by Edeline Lee, the Duchess praised the talent she saw in the dresses of the young designers she met before the ceremony.

She said: “It’s an absolute honor to be here today. Heard so many inspiring stories about UK creativity and seen such incredible work from so many talented designers, well done and congratulations.”

Nash said receiving the award from the Duchess was “surreal” during a ceremony hosted by the British Fashion Council at London’s Design Museum, and described how he studied performance before becoming drawn to fashion design.

He said: “I’ve always wanted to create sportswear that challenges preconceptions about sportswear.

“I don’t really like to dress for specific occasions, I wear what I like to wear when I like to wear it. So my brand is all about that self-liberation, whether it’s for people who like to jog or just dance.

The first prize was presented to Richard Quinn in February 2018 when the Queen attended London Fashion Week for the first time.

Caroline Rush, Chief Executive of the British Fashion Council, said: “I think it’s so important to recognize the incredible creative talent that we have in the UK.

“We are known worldwide as a leader in creativity, not just in fashion but in all our creative industries, in music, in film, in fashion, in architecture.

“And it’s really important to support and encourage that and make sure people can stay in the UK and grow their business.”

British Vogue Editor-in-Chief Edward Enninful co-chaired the jury that selected Nash for the award and met the Duchess at the event.

He said they spoke about the “craftsmanship” associated with the fashion industry and he was “really proud of what’s happening in the UK and what we have in the UK is so important – groundbreaking – and we just have to keep it going”.

But he’s kept quiet with reports that Kate will soon be the cover star of his fashion bible.
