Hollyoaks actress Katie McGlynn has revealed that she received death threats because of her character’s disgusting remarks about Chinese people.

The 28-year-old, who joined Channel 4 last summer as Becky Quentin, has suffered a wave of nasty comments following the vile stereotypes of her character.

The star revealed that trolls had told her to “go die” and to “beware” of Becky’s extreme views.

Talking to SunKatie said: ‘I’ve played bitchy characters before but I’ve never played someone as controversial or radical as Becky.

“I knew from the start that she was going to create a lot of hate.”

Katie says she’s quite “thick-skinned” and often comments on social media a little salt.

However, she says she has also received direct messages from people saying she should go and die.

“There’s a saying, ‘I hate Becky so much. She’s so mean and obstinate – I’ll go after you”, which makes me a bit alarming,” she said. “Others told me I should watch out because they were coming to arrest me.”

Katie says she usually just deletes and blocks trolls and that, while reading them, she doesn’t take them seriously because it just means she’s doing her job right.

“Everybody meant to hate Becky, so we got it right,” she said.

Becky is also an anti-vaxxer who has been selling dangerous conspiracy theories – adding fuel to the fire for her trolls.

Katie added: “I knew from the very beginning what Becky was going to be and where the story was going.

“I wanted to do it because it highlights conspiracy theories, fake news, and racism.”

She went on to say that these are things that have happened over the past few years and need to be properly addressed.

Despite the horrific threats, Katie did not report the trolls to the police, saying she considers the hate to be a ‘badge of honor’

The star also shared that she’s more troubled by people who sympathize with her character’s lowly opinions than by trolls.

The controversial character has seen Katie turn completely upside down with her sweet Coronation Street character Sinead Osbourne, whom Katie has played on Coronation Street for over seven years.

The actress brought soap fans to tears when she left the ITV show in 2019, when her character died of cervical cancer just months after giving birth to son Bertie – the performance was brought Katie the Best Serial Performance award at the following year ‘s National Television Awards .

“Becky is miles away from Sinead, and as an actor it’s something that I can really get into – even if it’s quite challenging,” she said.
