Keir Starmer Makes Captain Hindsight Joke On Boris Johnson Over Windfall Tax ‘U-Turn’
The Labor leader said while Boris Johnson was “distracted” trying to save his own job, the country has been counting the costs as budget bills have soared
Keir Starmer has attacked Boris Johnson at the Prime Minister’s Questions minutes after he was slammed by damning revelations in Sue Gray’s report.
The Labor leader launched his questions about the Tories’ apparent plans to push for a windfall tax, even turning the Prime Minister’s Captain Hindsight joke against him.
Mr Starmer asked the PM what attracted him to heed Labor’s calls and vote to introduce the levy on oil and gas companies, which is due to come later this week.
The Labor leader said: “Fifteen tax hikes and they pretend to be a low-tax government. It’s been four and a half months since Labor first called for a windfall tax on oil and gas profits… every week they have a new reason against doing it.”
He added: “Last week he ordered all his MPs to vote against and now, surprise surprise, he’s backing it. Prime Minister I’ve been told that hindsight is a wonderful thing…while he procrastinated and procrastinated, households across the country suffered when they didn’t need to.
“What made him do a U-turn for the first time this week about the Sue Gray report?”

The Prime Minister managed to stutter a reply: ‘It’s no surprise at Labor’s eagerness to raise taxes.
“There’s nothing original about … they figure it out. They absolutely love confiscating other people’s assets.
“What we prefer to do is make sure we have the policies that are in place to drive investment and create jobs in our country.”
After weeks of being called out by the statistics watchdog, the Prime Minister has stopped lying about Britain’s economic growth, adding instead: “And that’s thanks to the steps we’ve taken, thanks to the fact that we’re out faster than anyone else European country.”
