Keith Richards says Rolling Stones hiatus is ‘necessary’ and makes him stronger

Keith Richards said that The Rolling Stones’ break in the 1990s was “a much needed hiatus” and that his time away from the legendary rock band made him “stronger”.

His veteran guitarist, 78, says the time it took for him to release his second solo album Main Offender with X-music Winos has given him a better “knowledge” of what it’s like to be a regular person.

The Rolling Stones nearly disbanded in the late 1980s due to growing animosity between Richards and lead singer Mick Jagger.

Speaking with Zane Lowe on Apple Music 1 about the 30th anniversary of Main Offender, which was released in 1992, Richards discussed how he has been “tightened” from the experience.

“It was a strange period,” he said.

“Looking back at it now, it was a much-needed hiatus. When we started again, I felt stronger than I had in a long time.

“Doing Winos, I learned a lot more about being a frontrunner.

“In other words, I returned to the Stones with more understanding of Mick’s work. And it’s surprisingly different, you’re always out there.

“I mean, you’re relentless. With the stones, I can slip my time. But with Winos, while I was also working on getting Winos to sing and play the guitar, that tightened me up a lot.

“And I brought a lot more knowledge and a much tighter feeling when I got back to the Stones.”

Richards and Jagger dropped their feud after the Rolling Stones were inducted into the US Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1989.

They embarked on a record-breaking Steel Wheels tour that ended in August 1990, after which they took a brief hiatus.
