Kerry funeral attack: Man arrested by Gardaí investigating stabbing of Thomas Dooley in Tralee

MURDER victim Tom Dooley recently posted a social media video claiming he and his family were not involved in any feud

In the video, which was posted on an unknown date, the victim identifies himself as Tom Dooley, from Killarney in Kerry, and says: “The Dooleys have no authority over anyone and the Dooleys have nothing to do with this feud.”

He goes on to warn that the only way his family would get involved in a feud is if someone called their house and challenged them to a fight.

The Irish Independent is able to reveal that the man in his 30s arrested in connection with the murder is very well known to the victim.

The man was arrested in the early hours of Thursday after an extensive search on Lake Garda.

He was jailed under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act 1984 and can now be questioned at Tralee Garda Station for a period of up to 24 hours.

The suspect remains in custody this afternoon.

Gardai made a second arrest for the fatal stabbing of Thomas “Tommy” Dooley, 43, just yards from a Kerry cemetery during a memorial service.

He is also being imprisoned under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act.

Tom Dooley was stabbed to death just meters from the cemetery on Wednesday after attending the funeral service of a young woman who had died suddenly.

He was attacked by a group of men outside New Rath Cemetery at Rathass in Tralee, where a large crowd had gathered for the funeral of a young Killarney mother.

His wife Siobhan also sustained serious injuries while trying to protect him after a violent altercation following a funeral.

Kerry Gardai feared the deceased might have known his attackers – and was subjected to a planned ambush.

Detectives will begin a murder investigation after recovering a variety of weapons including knives and machetes.

Mr Dooley, who has an address in Killarney but had also lived in Cork, was found surrounded by a group of men in Rathass, apparently after a disagreement and subsequent confrontation just after noon.

A scuffle then broke out.

Attorney General Helen McEntee called the fatal stabbing “an absolutely appalling attack”.

“I can’t say much more. My condolences to this man and his family. It’s an ongoing investigation so I have faith that the Gardaí will get the job done and that there will be justice for the family,” Ms McEntee said.
