Ahead of his epic appearance at Hall H at SDCC this year (and amidst all the other events in his tight schedule), Kevin Smith spoke with Limit line about his return to pop culture mecca after a pandemic-related hiatus, his filmmaking franchise, and his latest movie trip back to Quick Stop.
During this conversation, he was asked if he initially considered his drug offenders to be breakout stars who could appear in multiple projects beyond “Clerks.” Not only did that thought never cross his mind, but Smith wasn’t sure anyone outside of his hometown would even connect with his first film.
“Never in a million years. It’s great to be able to go home to those characters, and it’s great that people still look down on them. pretty much understand why people like ‘Secretary’ so much. I didn’t think it would play outside of New Jersey because it’s a very regional, workplace comedy, but you don’t have to be from New Jersey to determine there’s a job you hate. Most people. Being able to turn that experience into a trilogy is great.”
As he said, there is certainly a universal truth contained in “Clerical” when it comes to being unsatisfied with your job. Even so, I feel like there’s more to it than that. I can’t speak for all Kevin Smith fans, but I know why I like “Secretary”. In short, that movie, along with Smith’s other films from “Mallrats” to “Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back,” really gave me a sense of belonging.
