Khamzat Chimaev and Gilbert Burns have agreed to stage a five-round rematch after the Swedish star was clinched in a close bout at UFC 273.
The pair fought in the welterweight “Fight Of The Night” with Chimaev raising his hand after decision despite being dropped twice in the fight. Burns fought valiantly and came very close to a stoppage of his own, with UFC President Dana White rewarding him with win bonus even after a loss.
Now the pair have agreed to a second fight on social media, with Burns tweeting, “If you call the cops and they don’t show up, you know who to call, five rounds.” Chimaev quickly fired back, “In five rounds will I’ll take your soul see you soon boy.”
Chimaev has a growing reputation in promotion and has enjoyed a notable climb, culminating in a rise to No. 3 at 170lbs. UFC Kingpin White confirmed that Chimaev l ikely next meets leading challenger Colby Covington after his win in an effective title eliminator for champion Kamaru Usman’s belt.
The ‘Nigerian Nightmare’ is expected first defend his belt against Leon Edwards after returning from injury later this year. He was also summoned by Chimaev, who was keen to challenge Covington and Edwards on social media after his win. Chimaev brutally assessed his performance after beating Burns and admitted he was desperate to seek a break during the fight.
“I was too excited to knock him out,” Chimaev explained at the UFC 273 post-fight press conference. “I’ve been telling everyone all week that I’m going to knock him out in one round. I tried turning it off. That was wrong for me from the start. The guy was tough, I didn’t accept that. From the first to the last second I tried to finish him off.

“Next time I’ll work to be a little smarter. I’m going to smash someone. It wasn’t surprising from him, but it was wrong for me. My trainer used to tell me all along, you love to throw down and do more technical work. I just want to take his head off. I’ll work for that next time. “
Burns was hailed for his brave performance but now finds himself frozen out of the immediate cover picture as a growing line of challengers wait to make their bid for Usman’s crown. Former UFC two-weight champion Henry Cejudo believes Chimaev should refrain from any shot against Usman in the near future after his recent performance.
That was the right call,” Cejudo said the schmo. “But if Chimaev goes out there and fights The Nigerian Nightmare like that, he’s in big trouble, man. We just saw him kind of become human here.”
