Gilbert Burns predicts a fight against Khamzat Chimaev

Colby Covington will be next in line Chamzat Chimaev if he can get past Gilbert Burns at UFC 273.

Chimaev is looking to finish in the top two at welterweight tonight when he challenges former title challenger Burns in Jacksonville, Fla. ‘Borz’ is a huge fight favorite despite only having four fights in his UFC career.

UFC chief Dana White said if Chimaev beats Burns, No. 1 contender Covington will fight him next on ABC. The UFC has only hosted two events on ABC, most recently last year when Marvin Vettori fought Kevin Holland.

“I think if Khamzat Chimaev wins this weekend we’ll see him and Colby Covington next. There’s a fight coming up at ABC and in a perfect world, if everything goes right, I’d love to play Khamzat against Colby if Khamzat were to win on Saturday night,” White said The Pat McAfee Show.

Former interim champions Covington have twice challenged for the undisputed title, but came down behind Kamaru Usman on both occasions. He most recently fought at UFC 272 last month and pointed to former teammate-turned-bitter rival Jorge Masvidal.

Chimaev thinks UFC boss White should go to ‘jail’ if he puts a fight between himself and Covington. The Chechen doesn’t think Covington will accept fighting him, stating: ‘I would be happy if they did, but I don’t think they will.

“This guy wouldn’t fight me. He would call the police and Dana White would be in jail if he made that fight. Like he always does, he talks too much to the media and then he sees you face to face and goes to the cops. He’s not that guy.”

Colby Covington and Jorge Masvidal fought at UFC 272

Chimaev’s comments about Covington’s call to the police come after him allegedly attacked by Masvidal outside a Miami restaurant just weeks after their fight. Masvidal faces assault charges after the altercation.

Covington downplayed a fight with No. 11 Chimaev because of his inexperience in the UFC. After his recent win, he said, “I don’t watch fights from people who have had three or fights in the UFC.

“He should be mad at his mum, his mum called him ‘C**shot’. It’s embarrassing man don’t be mad at me bro? Be mad at your mum she ‘C**shot’ you called.”
