Kidd Creole’s murder trial begins with a lawsuit in self-defense

Rapper Kidd Creole’s trial began in New York City when his attorney told a jury it was self-defense when the hip-hop pioneer stabbed a homeless man in 2017.

The artist, founding member of Grandmaster Flash and The Furious Five, is charged with murder and was on trial in a Manhattan criminal court on Friday.

Prosecutors said the rapper, whose real name is Nathaniel Glover, stabbed John Jolly twice in the chest with a steak knife after he got angry because he thought Mr. Jolly was gay and hit him.

The stabbing happened while Glover was walking to his Manhattan service station just before midnight on August 1, 2017, and Mr. Jolly asked him, “What’s going on?” authorities said.

“Ladies and gentlemen, this is New York City. It’s 12 o’clock at night. Who says “What’s up?” with good intentions to you?” Glover’s attorney Scottie Celestin told the jury.

“His fear for his life was reasonable.”

Mr Celestin also said Mr Jolly died from a dose of the sedative benzodiazepine given to him in a hospital, not from the stab wounds.

Assistant District Attorney Mark Dahl told jurors Glover confessed to police and stabbed Mr Jolly not in self-defense but out of anger because he thought Mr Jolly was hitting him.

“The defendant has confessed to pulling out a kitchen knife and repeatedly jabbing it into the body of a stranger in the street, killing him,” Mr Dahl said.

“Was there anything that would prevent him from just running away from Mr. Jolly? No.”
