Kilkenny, charged with murder, told Gardaí when arraigned on second charge: ‘I didn’t expect it’

One man accused of murder told Gardaí: “I didn’t expect that” after being charged with a second charge of assaulting the deceased’s wife.

ndrew Cash, 29, appeared in Carlow District Court this morning in connection with the fatal stabbing of his brother-in-law on Tuesday afternoon.

The victim, 40-year-old John Cash, died just before 1pm after suffering serious injuries on Hebron Road, near Kilkenny City.

He was taken to St. Luke’s General Hospital but was pronounced dead a short time later.

This morning Garda Colm McMenamin from Kilkenny Garda Station testified in court.

He said he arrested Andrew Cash at 11.57pm last night to charge him with the May 3 murder of John Cash in Kilkenny.

Gda McMenamin said the defendant did not comment when the charges were presented to him.

Andrew Cash, of Highrath in Clara, Co Kilkenny, is also accused of assaulting Elizabeth Cash at the same location on the same day. She is the wife of John Cash.

The Garda testified that Andrew Cash replied: “I didn’t expect that” when the second charge was brought against him.

Defense attorney Chris Hogan said he could not seek bail because the High Court could only grant it on a murder charge.

He asked that his client receive psychiatric and medical care while in detention.

A request for legal aid was also granted by Judge Geraldine Carthy. She remanded the accused to appear before Kilkenny District Court on May 10.

The defendant, wearing a green sweater and gray pants, did not address the court during the brief hearing. Family members were also present.

Following the killing on social media, Mr Cash’s family and friends have paid a heartfelt tribute to the knife victim, who was originally from Dublin.

One wrote: “I can’t believe this mortal sin Dankys Johnny Cash may you rest in heaven please God give strength to your little family.” Kilkenny, charged with murder, told Gardaí when arraigned on second charge: ‘I didn’t expect it’
