Kim Kardashian has called the court-ordered delay in the execution of a Texas woman the “best news ever”.
Elissa Lucio was due to be given a lethal injection on Wednesday before being granted a “stay of execution” – a temporary stay of sentence – to allow a lower court jury to examine evidence that could acquit her.
Lucio was convicted in the 2007 death of her daughter Mariah, who prosecutors say was a child abuse victim.
Kardashian, who is studying to become a lawyer and is following the case, wrote about the news on her Instagram Story and said it was the “best news ever”!
She added: “Melissa Lucio has been on death row for over 14 years because her daughter died in a tragic accident.
“She is getting a new trial on her case and has been granted a stay of execution by the Texas Court of Appeals.”
A statement from Lucio provided by her lawyers said: “I am grateful that the court gave me the chance to live and to prove my innocence.
“Mariah is in my heart today and always. I am grateful to have more days to be a mother to my children and a grandmother to my grandchildren.
“I will use my time to help bring her to Christ. I am deeply grateful to all who have prayed and spoken out for me.”

Kardashian previously said she was “heartbroken” by written pleas from Lucio’s children and that there were “many unresolved questions” about the case.
The reality star has worked on several high-profile legal cases across the US and recently passed the first-year law exam known as the “Baby Bar.”
The 41-year-old recently branded the US justice system “unfair” in the case of 26-year-old truck driver Rogel Aguilera-Mederos, who was sentenced to 110 years in prison after a crash that killed four people in 2019.
