Kim Kardashian testifies at Blac Chyna’s trial

Kim Kardashian has testified that she doesn’t recall trying to kill off the reality show with her brother Rob Kardashian and his then-fiancée Blac Chyna.

But she admitted she demanded that Ms Chyna be kept away from Keeping Up With the Kardashians after hearing she had abused her brother.

“I will not go into a toxic work environment,” Ms. Kardashian said of her refusal to work with Ms. Chyna. “On my own show, I have the power to do that.”

Ms. Kardashian testified for an hour Tuesday in a Los Angeles courtroom in a civil suit in which Ms. Chyna alleges that Ms. Kardashian and three other members of her family defamed Ms. Chyna and accused producers and the E! Network to cancel spinoff show Rob & Chyna.

Her testimony was largely unremarkable — she spent much of it saying, “I don’t remember” — but as easily the biggest star to testify in a star-studded trial, she caused quite a stir when she moved from the gallery to the The witness stand wore a dark gray pinstripe suit with white sneakers. The moment she resigned, several reporters rushed out of the courtroom to file stories.

Ms. Chyna’s attorney, Lynne Ciani, showed Ms. Kardashian a series of text messages from late 2016 and early 2017 with Ms. Kardashian’s name attached.

In each case, Ms. Kardashian said she had no recollection of sending them, although she didn’t dispute their likely legitimacy.

“I don’t remember any text messages I sent this morning,” Ms. Kardashian said.

In response to a text exchange, a lengthy conversation with a producer at production company Bunim Murray, which produced both shows, Ms. Kardashian admitted, “That definitely sounds like something I would say.”

In it, she expressed anger that Ms. Chyna may still be filmed for Keeping Up With the Kardashians, in which Ms. Chyna has occasionally appeared alongside her own show.

“I think we all need to take a break from filming at this point until we figure out what’s going on. She won’t be on our show,” the caption said.

“So if you film with Rob and Chyna, you’re going to lose the Kardashians and Jenners.”

The text exchange includes several seemingly scathing demands that Ms Chyna be filmed for “her” show, but Ms Kardashian insisted it was a quirk of the technology.

“This is clearly linguistically dictated, as is everything I write that is this long, and it sometimes renders ‘our’ as ‘you,'” Ms. Kardashian testified.

“I would never refer to her show as ‘her’ show, I would say ‘Rob’s Show’ since it’s a spin-off of ‘Keeping Up With the Kardashians’.”

She added that the recipient, Amanda Weinstein, didn’t work on Rob & Chyna.

Ms. Kardashian said the text exchange showed that she and her family had no power over what the producers and network ultimately decided about the shows.

“Nobody listens to us, nobody respects us,” it says in a text message.

What they could do was withhold their own participation in the Keeping Up With the Kardashians case.

“As a cast member, I have every right to say that we really need a break,” Ms. Kardashian testified.

Much of the trial, including testimonies from Ms. Kardashian’s mother Kris Jenner and sister Kylie Jenner, focused on a December 15, 2016 fight between Chyna and Rob Kardashian that eventually led to the couple’s split and the cancellation of their show.

Ms Ciani asked Ms Kardashian if she saw injuries on her brother that day.

“I just remember he was super emotional at that moment, and it’s really all so blurry,” Ms. Kardashian said. “I remember he was really red, but I don’t remember anything in particular, just that he looked bloated and red.”

Asked repeatedly if she instructed her sisters to notify executives and producers of the assault the lawsuit alleges, Ms. Kardashian said she had no recollection of doing so and ended up getting mildly angry with Ms. Ciani, but stayed calmly.

“I know you would like my answer to change,” Ms. Kardashian said. “You asked the same question about four times, I wish I had a better answer for you but I just don’t remember.”

When specifically asked if she instructed Kylie Jenner to email on the subject, Ms. Kardashian replied, “I don’t control my sisters’ lives and I don’t have conversations with them before they email.”

A video of American Idol host Ryan Seacrest, who co-developed Keeping Up With the Kardashians with Kris Jenner, was played for the judges later Tuesday.

Mr Seacrest said his role as executive producer on Rob & Chyna came with no duties. He said his Kardashians contract automatically gave him the title for all spinoffs.

But he also promoted the series on his radio show.

When asked about his first impression of Ms Chyna, he said: “She was brave and memorable”.

“Do brave and memorable people make good television?” Ms. Ciani asked him on the video.

“Sometimes yes and sometimes no. In the episode I watched, I must have thought, yes.”

“Why?” asked Ms. Ciani.

“Because I kept promoting it,” said Mr. Seacrest.
