Atletico Madrid star Koke has fired back at Pep Guardiola after his compatriot Diego criticized Simeone’s defensive tactics during their game Champions League Collision.
Manchester City The first leg was won 1-0 thanks to a goal from Kevin de Bruyne midway through the second half. There were few chances at Etihad, Atletico sat deep and even missed a shot themselves.
City manager Guardiola was visibly disappointed with the way the game was developing due to Atletico’s defensive approach. The Spaniard even accused Simeone of playing without a striker to slow down the home side’s attacking game.
Explaining how he thought Simeone set up his side, Guardiola said: “He [Diego Simeone] has set [Antoine] Griezmann on the far right and Joao Felix on the far left, and they played 5-5-0. Two lines of 5.
“And in prehistory, today and in a hundred thousand years, it’s very difficult to attack a 5-5. It’s like there’s no place. Apart from being very competitive and defending very well, there’s no place. “

Simeone also defended the way he approached the game against City, insisting it was a compliment to the Sky Blues and that there was only so much he could achieve with the players at his disposal. He explained: “We played against an exceptional opponent. The statistics speak for themselves. They are very dynamic.
“We want to continue with the means at our disposal. We defended really well, a tremendous collective effort. We could have attacked a bit better on the break.”
“Let’s see if we can have the ball a little bit more and give our opponents more trouble, but that comes from calmness and collective defence. I was shown how to keep up in every possible way to the end.”
