The move against Echo Moskvy, one of Russia’s oldest radio stations, comes amid growing pressure on independent Russian media to follow the Kremlin’s official line while covering the invasion of Ukraine.
Officials have also threatened to block Dozhd, Russia’s leading independent TV channel.
The Prosecutor General’s Office accused the two media outlets of spreading content inciting extremist activities, as well as “false information about the actions of Russian servicemen during a special operation” in Ukraine.
Immediately after Moscow’s invasion of Ukraine on Thursday, Russian officials threatened to shut down independent media if their coverage of the attack deviated from official narratives, including its depiction of the attack. The attack was an “invasion” or “war”.
The Current Times website, a Russian TV channel sponsored by Radio Free Europe / Radio Free America and a critic of the Kremlin, went offline on Sunday after it said it had receive notice from the authorities.
