Krishnan Guru-Murthy: Channel 4 news anchor apologizes for berating UK minister in ‘unguarded moment’

Channel 4 newsreader Krishnan Guru-Murthy has issued an “unreserved” apology to Britain’s Secretary of State for Northern Ireland Steve Baker after berating him in an “unguarded moment”.

The broadcaster said the remark followed a “robust interview” with Mr Baker but it was “below the standards I’ve set for myself”.

It comes after another tumultuous day in Westminster, which saw Suella Braverman resign as Home Secretary.

During an off-air moment following his exchange with Mr Baker, Mr Guru-Murthy was heard saying, “What ac ***”.

He later tweeted: “Following a robust interview with Steve Baker MP I used a very offensive word in an off air unguarded moment.

“Although it was not aired, in any context that word is below the standards I have set for myself and I apologize unreservedly.

“I have reached out to Steve Baker to apologize.”

In an interview with Times Radio, Baker said that firing Guru-Murthy would be a “public service” if he was found to be violating his code of conduct.

“I had an interview earlier with a journalist I don’t particularly like who I think misrepresented the situation by the construction of his question which I shouted I believe live on air or I thought it was some pre-recording” , he said.

“And he clearly didn’t like that, rightly so. But I’ll be honest, I spent a long time live on the air, denouncing him for his behavior as a journalist, and I was always happy to do so.

“But it is very unfortunate that he swore so on air. If it goes against his code of conduct, I hope they fire him – it would be a public service.”

Mr Baker later responded to Guru-Murthy’s tweet, accepting the apology and saying he “appreciated” the gesture. Krishnan Guru-Murthy: Channel 4 news anchor apologizes for berating UK minister in ‘unguarded moment’
